Heh, I read through this thread, and sorry but most people really sound like the "grapes are sour" fox from the famous fable who couldn't jump high enough to reach the grapes and decided they weren't worth it anyway .

If someone has enough cash to unload 100k for a weapon they want, so what?
Jealousy is not a very nice trait .

I'm glad there are people who want gold and only gold - allows me to sell the gold crap I find while farming for nice prices! I don't care about gold or purple, but I do have a weakness for weapons that look "cool" myself (now what's wrong with that?! I have to stare at my character's weapon every time I exit the town after all! And I just hate the look of some swords & axes. My warrior has a collection of plain chaos axes with various mods I added myself, each dyed a different color depending on the mod :P)

The game gives people who don't have a lot of money the option to use collectors weapons, that will have good stats, and miss only a few extra mods that many nicier gold items have (although sometimes the way bonuses are combined does not make a practical sense ... for example that earth req staff with air magic and protection bonus?).

The advantage of the collectors items is they are so easy to get one doesn't mind "customizing" them for the extra 20% dmg bonus. While a gold or purple many won't customize and thus aren't even as good as a collectors weapon. But, if people want to waste their money no sweat off my you know whats.

Collectors items are good, but one thing about gold items is that they can have lower requirements than the collectors items. And you can of course smack upgrades on a gold item as well (replacing the old ones).

That said, I didn't know there was a max collectors long sword, and as I love the look of long swords, I'll now head to get me one.

Mountain Troll Tusks.

And there's another Ascalon Bow in the Arid Sea collector Sir Pohl somethingoranother, he collects dune burrower jaws and returns another 15>50 Ascalon Bow, though I did notice this one's arc was lower.

As for the whole gold item vs collector item debate, I have to say that yes, certain weapons are just as good as rares, but people just want the unique look of a rare weapon.

I mean...honestly, if Fellblades were really common, would you really want one?

...actually if you really think about it, there are probably more warriors running around with chaos axes, fellblades, and whatnot, than warriors running around with collector weapons.

-edit-

To the guy above me, the collector longsword doesn't look like a "longsword" that you'd find as a drop, rather, it looks exactly like Stefan's sword, an Ascalon razor.

And also, you can put upgrades on collector weapons.

Although I agree that if people have the money, then why not spend it...

But I think people need educating about max damage weapons / max armour shields.

For example, I see the message, 'WTB max armour shield', so I whisper him with, 'sure, meet me by storage'.

Start to trade with him and put my blue max armour shield in the trade window, when I get a whisper saying 'I said max armour - this isn't max armour, it's not gold!'

OH, please...

Gold does not equal max armour / max damage. Learn from this...

If he was looking for a gold shield, then I wouldn't have bothered, but he asked for max armour and no specific stats on the shield.

Some people,eh?!

I have gotten perfect stats/upgrades off of purples before.. it is much more rare but possible.. did you know you can even find minor runes from plain white armors? its extremely rare and not even worth the cost of the id kit at all but still possible.. if you don't believe me, I dont care :-P

ok...i might believe you on the runes since i never really salvage any whites and the perfect mods on a blue or purple part not so sure about that but if you say you have seen it then who am i to doubt? But the fact still remains that gold items hold the highest chance and the practice of salvaging mods is why those people are after the gold.

Default collectors shields

If you want the shields you will need 5 frosted griffin wings or 5 massive giants bones and go to snakes dance or the dunes. But unless you can solo, you will spend about 5 hours farming to get enough of those items or unless you pay for them. I sell those items for 800 gold for the frosted item each and 2 k for the one in the dunes because it is more trouble to get. Put me on your friends list if your interested. It will save you time.

I totally agree. Some of the gold items I've come across are rather disappointing, and not quite useful. The experienced player will choose the better stats/mods over a gold item w/ inferior stats. No point trying to argue w/ ppl who can't understand that.

Low requirements is a relative term. The highest requirements I've seen is lvl 9 (plz correct me if I'm wrong), and that's the equivalent of a lvl 5 in that attribute plus a sup rune plus a headpiece. Aside from the sup monk runes, the other classes are relatively affordable.

The difference between gold items and purple items is simple. Gold items are more likely to have higher innate mods and more likely to have higher parts. Once identified weapon color doesn't really matter anymore. You can still get max parts out of purples (just less common.) You can still get complete crap out of gold items. Once the item is identified it really doesn't matter anymore though.

I get a chuckle out of people desperately trying to get "Perfect" gold items when I can usually outperform them with just random weapons I pick up. The PvE crowd is definately amusing. It is one giant case of too rich for their own good.

I must say, the amount of information in this thread is astounding!. I must also say that about 50% of it is incorrect. Let's put a few things to rest:

Collector Bows:
Crystal Desert
--------------
Arid Sea
* Sir Pohl Sandbert trades 5 Dune Burrower Jaws for Ascalon Bow 15-28 (req. 9 Marksmanship), +15% damage while Health is above 50% (Longbow)

Diviner's Ascent
* Luven Underwood trades 5 Minotaur Horns for Ascalon Bow 15-28 (req. 9 Marksmanship), +15% damage while enchanted (Flatbow) (just outside Elona Reach)

Skyward Reach
* John Verado trades 5 Topaz Crests for Ascalon Bow 15-28 (req. 9 Marksmanship), +15% damage while Health is above 50% (Composite bow) (just outside of Augury Rock)
* Mourn Drakespur trades 5 Dessicated Hydra Claws for Ascalon Bow 15-28 (req. 9 Marksmanship), +15% damage while Health is above 50% (Short bow) (southwest of Destiny's Gorge)

Vulture Drifts
* Karl Jakobs trades 5 Massive Jawbones for Ascalon Bow 15-28 (req. 9 Marksmanship), +15% damage while enchanted (Horn bow)

Southern Shiverpeaks
--------------------
Lornar's Pass
* Nord Stonegrimm trades 5 Frozen Shells for Ascalon Bow 15-28 (req. 9 Marksmanship), +15% damage while Health is above 50% (Flatbow?) - Not confirmed as a Flatbow or Longbow

Mineral Springs
* Trego Stonebreaker trades 5 Mountain Troll Tusks for Ascalon Bow 15-28 (req. 9 Marksmanship), +15% damage while Health is above 50% (Short bow)
* Bariel Darkroot trades 5 Alpine Seeds for Ascalon Bow 15-28 (req. 9 Marksmanship), +15% damage while Health is above 50% (Composite bow)

Snake Dance
* Hoknil the Lesser trades 5 Azure Remains for Ascalon Bow 15-28 (req. 9 Marksmanship) +15% damage while Enchanted (Horn Bow)

Witman's Folly
* Mag Ironwall trades 5 Intricate Grawl Necklaces for Ascalon Bow 15-28 (req. 9 Marksmanship), +15% damage while enchanted (Flatbow) (just outside Port Sledge)

All Bows w/ 15^50 'something'.

Gold weapons have more mods, to begin with, that's it. Take any collector's weapon and you can mod it up just like a Gold one, cheaper (because not everyone wants to spend hours and hours trying to sell that 10/10 sundering for 100k. Why? I can get the 10/7 for 5k, a 3% diff). "Chances of rain today: 10%." or "Chances or rain today: 7%." It's probably not going to rain.

Gold items do not come with 'extra' mods that cannot be salvaged and placed on others, i.e. +30 Fortitude mod works on blue too, and white.

Stormbows are pretty longbows.

Augury Rock Collector = composite bow.

My Blue, Zealous Ascalon (short) bow of Defense +5, w/ 15%^50, +20% customized rocks with the right speed modifiers and holy damage (Judge's Insight = 20% armor penetration) and I never run out of energy. Oh yeah, the bow looks Purple during battles as cheap, easy-to-find, Purple Dye colors it well.

Gold Items have a HIGHER attribute requirement than collectors'. Why else would you explain the 13 in Marksmanship required for that Gold Ebon Longbow of Shelter +7 w/14%^50, worth 380g to merchant? Worthless bow, but if I took the Ebon and the Shelter and placed it on a collector's longbow w/ 15%^50, voila! - same bow, but only need 9 Marksmanship. Although I wouldn't use Ebon String and Shelter Grip, you get what I'm saying.

Bottom line: Gold items are cosmetic compared to the exact same in Collector's. Works in the real world too: I've had my $30 Timex for years, but the rich guy's Rolex he just bought for $10,000 shows each of us the same TIME - just in a slightly prettier way.

No, they have a span of attribute requirements from 7 to 13. Which means it can be lower, or it can be higher.
